caleb's big birthday beach bash

so it wasn't really big or a bash, but hey, i like alliteration.

at any rate, it was a blast! yeah, we were running late, and stressed, and i forgot my ID (needed to get on base where the beach was), and caleb didn't nap until he crashed in my arms as we were packing up when we officially called it a day. but it was so much fun it was worth it all. caleb allayed all my fears that he would be afraid of the sand with the first five minutes, and there is still some sand in his ears to prove it:


and then of course, there was cupcake time. i meant to get a picture of them all with 'happy birthday caleb' carefully spelled out in chocolate chips (since i couldn't write), but when the time came, we wanted to see him tear into his cupcake in too much to bother.

caleb, however, was not in a hurry, and either didn't know what to make of such a sweet treat or was determined to savor the experience. once he got his hands down into it, he sat there acting like his hands were stuck for several minutes before he started to lick his fingers clean. here's a little photo sequence of how he took to it:

we were so thankful to have so many guests (caleb only has a few little people friends) and thoroughly enjoyed a sadly rare day at the beach. even his doctor came (she's also seb's co-worker) and took all of these pictures for us. almost all my stress of the planning melted away as soon as i saw how much fun caleb was having, and the beach itself did the rest of the job. hopefully soon we'll start heading to the beach more often - we could really use more days like this.
