the anti-bedtime story and other tricks

caleb's been rejecting naps left and right lately, and this past sunday seb and i decided to help him through his post-non-nap period with a trip to the dole plantation. we had a good time, he fed the fish in their pond, enjoyed some dole whip, and waved to all the riders on the plantation train ride.

but the real fun (for me anyway) began on the ride home. seb was in the backseat and charged with the duty of keeping caleb from falling asleep so he'd still be willing to go to bed when we got home.

he started with the story of the boy who cried wolf, the seb edition.

'there was once a boy named caleb, who lived on an island where there were no wolves.

but caleb really wanted to see a wolf. he had seen many dogs, and when he saw a dog, the dog got closer and closer and panted in his face and then went 'ttthhhhlllpppp!' and licked all over his face.

caleb thought, wow, if that is what a dog does, then i REALLY want to see a wolf!

then one day caleb went to the zoo with his dad and guess what he saw - a wolf! and the wolf got closer and closer, and panted in his face, and ATE HIM!'

sweet story huh? i especially like the failure to explain how caleb's dad let him get close enough to be eaten in the first place.

doesn't seem like the kind of story to lull one to sleep but caleb was really tired, and further action was needed. i was driving, and didn't know what was going on, all i know was that all of a sudden seb was making sounds that i could best describe as futurama's zoidberg eating two fighting cats.

he later told me that he was putting caleb's foot in his mouth as he was making that noise, all i know is that in the front seat i was laughing so hard i had to fight to keep one eye open to watch the road and ended up quite hypoxic. but it worked, caleb stayed awake for the rest of the drive and went to bed with no problems.
