monday caleb and i had a great day just hanging around home and i actually got alot accomplished: i got three loads of laundry done before noon (don't laugh, that is a serious accomplishment these days,) put away a mess of stuff that had been sitting around in our office waiting for me to get to it, and (here is one bonus) caleb actually took a nap.
a real actual nap! at home! without me holding him!
so far caleb had only napped during the day in the sling or carseat on outings or if i let him fall asleep during a feeding and then just held him (if i tried to lay him down he'd wake up.) but we finally broke down and got him a little swing, and it did the trick.
i had not wanted to get a swing if we didn't have to, partially to avoid one more thing we strap him in to, and partly to have one less thing to add to our swelling collection of baby items that are at this point taking over the place. but i could tell by this time that he wanted and could benefit from a nap but just had trouble making it happen when we were just at home, and i'm sorry, but if he's willing to take a nap in the day, then darnit, i would love to have that time to actually do something, even if it's just a chance to do some dishes. don't get me wrong, i have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy chances to hold him as he sleeps and just relish the sweetness of the moment, but i was starting to feel like my house was falling apart around me a bit, and it is nice to have a chance to pull things back together.
the second bonus happened monday when i was folding tissue paper from the copious amounts of baby shower gift bags i received. now caleb loves the 'crackly paper' that is now so common in baby toys and books, and as i was folding i came across a sheet that was not paper but plastic, and made exactly this wonderful crackly noise, and i let him play with it and he had a blast, satisfyingly crunching it in his fists and between his feet. this totally cheap form of entertainment surely foreshadows Christmas mornings spent with him playing in the cardboard boxes of the toys he received.
and tuesday, the third bonus, and by all means the best of the three: he laughed his first real laugh. i had just gotten off the phone with my very pregnant friend, and had told her he had laughed last night in his sleep, that smiling in his sleep and come shortly before smiling awake, and hopefully the same was true with this, and not ten minutes later, he just broke out in laughter. i was so astonished and excited, i think i scared him with my reaction, and spent the rest of the day trying to get him to do it again, to no avail. but i got a couple more good ones today, and i will try to get it on tape and figure out how to post a video clip so his nana and grandma can hear it.
sometimes the little things in life can be so big.
