something, something, something, apples....

so, shopping with caleb has become considerably more challenging.

at first this was because i was trying very hard to limit disruptions in his nap schedule, which i am still trying my best to do. part of this means, instead of letting him sleep through our weekly grocery shopping in the sling, i try to make sure he stays awake in the baby bjorn. which he actually seems to enjoy quite a bit, as there is so much in the store to keep him totally fascinated.

but lately his curiosity has taken on a more pro-active stance, and i am afraid that the days of shopping with him in this fashion are quickly coming to a close. today, apparently motivated by success with the cracker, caleb decided to graduate to paper.

this led to me very loudly repeating over and over 'YOU ATE MY LIST' in a way that got me a lot of looks. i was not angry, just completely dumbfounded. and hoping there was nothing too toxic in 5 rows' worth of ink.

now, i am the sort of person who really depends on my grocery list, and for the life of me, could not at all remember what was on the section he had decided to nibble away. (at least not before i was out of the store, but isn't that always how it is?)

i tried to keep the list far away from him, but having already whet his appetite, the list proved too tempting, and he began to outright grab for it. by the end of the shopping trip, it looked like this:

of course, this is not the really concerning part. the concerning part is that he also seemed determined to grab at the eggs as i was checking them for cracks, at the meat as i was putting it in a bag, and at various items on the shelves as i reached to get something. last week he knocked down a can of vegetables that very nearly got my foot, and i have decided i really have to come up with another plan before i end up with a jar of spaghetti sauce splattered across the aisle.

i hope he can start sitting up soon, then i'll just put him in the cart seat. only so much damage he can do from there. right?
