well, i may not completely be a super granola-organic-milk-my-own-cow-make-my-own-yogurt sort of a mom, but i am to a degree. i buy them organic dairy for the things they consume most of, and limit their mac-n-cheese to once a week. mostly. but what i hadn't done was worry what was in most of the BABY-SAFE sunscreen i was slathering my kids with. leave it to my sister in law (the pediatrician who told me about pthalates and bisphenol-A before it was a big deal with the baby-products) to dig up this web site.
turns out sunscreens (even baby ones) have things that can cause cancer or once absorbed act like estrogen, etc. now, i'm not one to say 'eeeek, CANCER' about every little thing and i admit i don't know enough to know if the levels in these sunscreens are enough to be harmful. but since there are alternatives that are safer, why not use them? i mean, why does sunscreen need to include neurotoxins? and why cover my kids in them if i don't have to?
so go check out the link, it is very user friendly, you can even input the name of the brand you have at home already and see what is in it and what the potential hazards are of those chemicals.
and then - enjoy the summer!
