yeah, right

so yesterday i get visited by a door to door salesperson, while caleb is taking his nap (naturally.) although he already earned my disdain for ringing the doorbell (which is loud enough in itself, but also causes the dog to bark like nuts), i put on my best "hello! how are you! no thanks!' smile as i headed downstairs.

at the door i am greeted by what i can best sum up as a sort of cross between vanilla ice and k-fed (a likeness i am sorry to acknowledge i feel qualified to recognize.)

k-ice apologizes for ringing and rightly guesses i have (had by then) a baby sleeping, but is not in the least bit deterred from proceeding with his quest. this turns out to be getting points from what he says is 'getting to know me, and what i do, so he can become more confident about is future and improve his public speaking skills.' uh-huh.

it is at this point that i realize how truly ironic it is that he has already sworn about 3 times, including the 'f' word in reference to how big my dog is.

i tell him my job is to be a mom, and he promptly tells me he views this as the 'hardest job there is' and confesses that he himself is a single dad to a 3 year old girl, the mom got scared and took of, but he feels, 'if you're responsible enough to get someone pregnant, you're responsible enough to be a dad. it's called RESPONSIBILITY.' alrighty.

so all this time i'm waiting for him to tell me why he's really here, but secretly hoping there's not a catch. he tells me he's in college, wants to go military, but didn't get the military to pay for his schooling because he had the money on his own, is going to graduate soon, wants to be a P.A., and then it starts to come together... he only needs 200 more points before he's met his goals for the program, that is somehow supposed to get his career started.

how does he earn these points, i ask?

he sells magazines. TADA!

so, at this point, i'm mostly feeling sorry for the guy, that most of what he said is probably some line to make me feel like we've connected so i'll want to help him out and buy his magazines, and also that i'm so cynical that at this point i'm almost expecting him to just ask for cash and pull out some hand-made registration form for the magazines i'm supposedly subscribing to. but he presents carbon copy, legitimate looking registration forms, and as i'd planned to subscribe to a magazine he had on his list anyway, i went ahead and gave him not 200 but 250 points which i am sure put k-ice right at ease, knowing that he had reached his goal, and could now retire happily to some vh1 celebreality show.
