birthday 1 - the actual birthday, celebrated with mom, daddy, and yaya at the nashville zoo. noah was still in the NICU at vanderbilt then, so i could only get away for a few hours, but my mommy-guilt compelled me to do something fun with my caleb on his birthday. the zoo was amazing and we had a great time.

taking a moment to consider what they're about to do...
...which is to slide down a 3-story corkscrew slide from the top of this AMAZING 'Jungle Gym' that the nashville zoo has. the animal displays are really well done, very natural and with good close up views, but honestly, this play structure makes it worth the drive to nashville all by itself. seriously, I want to go play in this thing.
the meerkats are one of caleb's favorites at the zoo, there's even a tunnel he can crawl through to pop up and take a closer peek in the middle of the exhibit.

a good portion of the exhibits are woven amongst thick groves of bamboo while beautiful pan flute music is piped in on speakers. caleb looked up and said, 'zoo is singing.' that's why we love you kiddo!
birthday 2 - mom and noah are home, and we had to have a party. caleb knew that at a 'party' there were balloons and cake (yummy carrot cake lovingly made by yaya) and candy and presents, and all were present in abundance.
he was so enrapt by the train set he opened first we had to practically set it up before he would be willing to open the rest of his presents!
but eventually he got to the duplo lego sets and new trike
here he is when we tried to take a picture of him with his cake. daddy told him, say 'cheese!'
for once i am glad that the camera was accidentally left on video mode!
birthday 3 - nana came to visit and help mom with baby noah, and guess what? we had ourselves another party. with another cake. made by nana. shaped like an AMBULANCE. you know, to go with his present.
nice work nana!
our first challenge was trying to keep him from sitting on it. then we had to console him that the front doors didn't open so he could make his small plastic animals drive it. then we had to figure out how to extract the giraffe that he had just barely managed to cram through the back doors. but he does really really love this toy.
so, no sappy video montage this year, mostly because it would simply take too long. but we have had an incredible year with this little guy who has changed and amazed us so much and in so many ways. at one he wasn't even walking yet and now he is singing songs! we love you caleb and can't wait to see what another year brings.
let's just hope he doesn't expect three parties next year!

Love that ambulance cake! I LOVED your Christmas letter. I was in a foul mood the day I received it and it truly made me spin and put me in the Christmas mood. I made sure S read it, too. And then that letter made our world all better. ;)
