i've never been one to really like to watch sports on tv. or in real life for that matter. i always loved the gymnastics part of the olympics, but that's different. i didn't really watch any sports at all until i started going to football games with my high school friends, who were almost all band members, and then it was mostly for the joy of seeing dave nimke screaming himself hoarse and appearing to care alot more about the game than i thought reasonable. even when i really got into the game, it was primarily because i liked to make fun of the players when they seemed to make a really stupid move (i never got why they would hand off the ball to someone and then he would proceed to run directly into the huge mass of players in front of him he had no hope of getting through). watching football at the games turned in to watching football on tv so i could have one more distraction from the boring math homework i didn't want to do. but eventually i liked watching for the drama... i don't follow teams, i'm not loyal to any of them, and who i root for is usually determined by who's the underdog... i like close games, i get bored when one team is just creaming the other.
this need for drama in sports pretty much eliminated baseball from my radar... i never really cared about it, never really wanted to go to a game. and watching it on tv would be like torture. and even though i liked 'field of dreams,' despite not liking kevin costner at all, i always thought the way that the game was romanticized in movies and literature was like a soap opera for guys. but seb's been watching the world series (lucky he can at all, it only comes in fuzzy with no sound) and though i still don't really care if the cardinals or the red sox win, i think it may actually be growing on me. i still think it's sort of boring to watch, but not tv-golf boring, but i've watched more consecutive baseball play in the last 2 days than in the whole of the rest of my life, and i can see how if you were there, it might actually be fun. i still don't know much about it, especially professional baseball (yesterday when the sox won game 1, i thought that was the end of it... didn't find out till today that the word 'series' in 'world series' actually has meaning) and i know i'll never be a hard core fan, but it no longer has my disdain. (BUT i still think professional athletes get paid WAY too much money).
