hanauma bay

nana is visiting, and since it may be a while before she is able to come back to hawaii, we headed out to hanauma bay today. hanauma bay is a good place for beginner snorkelers, and receives about a million visitors a year. we have taken many of our guests, but rarely go ourselves, since we have been spoiled on big island snorkeling and now snobbishly find hanauma bay snorkeling beneath us ;).

nana mostly wanted to wade in the shallow and peek at a few fish with a mask, which naturally, was the only thing we forgot to pack. i planned to spend most of the time sitting at the waters' edge letting caleb splash in the little waves.

unfortunately, the waves were a little big for that, and so we parked ourselves under a small patch of shade and just enjoyed the lazy day on the beach. we snacked on some pears, cheese, and the occasional bath toy, and tried not to get sunburned.

i was pleased to see he was no longer afraid of the sand, and that he was also fascinated enough just to touch it with his hands, and did not try to give it a taste test.
he missed a nap, but did have a good time, he is a people watcher like his daddy, and seemed especially attentive when he heard someone speaking a foreign language. and needless to say, he managed to turn a few heads as well.
